After seeing the movie Get Out I pondered on the message, and what it meant for the black experience. I then began to analyze deeper and applied the message in Get Out to Corporate America. Society’s brain washing will make you believe that Corporate America is the end all be all. That if your aspirations are not to climb the corporate ladder then you are abnormal in some kind of way and deemed crazy.

The truth of the matter is entrepreneurship is the real American Dream. That is the REAL freedom. Like in Get Out, the hypnosis is the idea that you should strive for what America deems as success. That hypnosis draws you in, makes you desire it, makes you crave. That drunken hypnosis lulls you and then years later you realize you have been paralyzed. You can’t move, you have fallen into that dark sunken place. You are screaming while you look up at the light of freedom. Legs kicking, arms flailing, you see it, but you can’t grasp anything to get out. Every day that light gets dimmer and you sink deeper. You sink with every offering and carrot and stick promise. Better benefits sink you deeper. Corporate perks sink you deeper. Small promotions and fake nods of approval sink you deeper.

What they don't tell you is that you CAN climb up the corporate ladder but only in some situations, and the price is your talent, time, and energy. With some companies climbing the corporate ladder involves a dirty little cocktail of ass kissing, ball juggling, and self-compromising. In return you miss your child's recital, their graduation, date night every Thursday, and brunch on Saturday. You wake up in your 40’s or 50’s- childless, powerless, and empty. In the movie each black guy believed Rose loved them, believed that her family was subliminally racist and she wasn’t. Corporate America brain washes you in the same way.

Your boss says you are worthless, that you are not experienced enough for this title or that pay, that your ideas are dumb and useless. That brain washing robs you of all creativity and empowerment. Don’t let people measure your value; like the introverted socially awkward Executive who takes orders like a mindless puppet? Or that obnoxious cold hearted witch who revels in evoking fear on her subordinates? These types only aspire to follow orders, not to have the balls to take a leap of faith and start a business. Success is relative and means different things to different people. However, there is nothing like being your own boss and utilizing your own gifts to leave a legacy for you and your family.

If you want to be empowered, kick ass, and refuse to be defeated and brain washed- GET OUT and start your own s*&t!

Find something you are passionate about and do it. Create your exit strategy and stick to it. Save your money, pay off debt, write a business plan and work that plan. Get your freedom, and GET OUT.
