Damn 2020- You Didn’t Have To Do Us Like That
Let’s discuss unemployment during the COVID-19 Crisis.
You’ve been laid off whether it was because of COVID-19 or company restructuring. Whatever the reason you have found yourself out of employment and in the unemployment line. Well, there is no line because you can no longer just walk into an unemployment office, but you get my point.
I know we have several I told you so people.
I told you to have 6 months of emergency funds saved
I told you to do the debt snowball
I told you to invest in this stock 2 years ago and you didn’t
When you experience a major life change like the loss of a job you are not in the mood for I told you so’s. Just like when people pass away and the masses say everything happens for a reason. Dude, we do not want to hear that. Not at this moment. We are confused, angry, and fearful. We need support and information, not a bunch of cliché statements and I told you so’s.
No I told you so’s here- just useful tips to help you if you are laid off.
1) It’s not your fault. Getting laid off can do a number on your mental. Try your best and stay positive. In the meantime, if you were laid off and not fired you are eligible for unemployment benefits.
2) You don’t have to apply for unemployment in person. You can do it online. For GA residents-
Visit https://dol.georgia.gov/
3) These are some documents that you need to have ready:
a. Your Separation notice (your job should have given you a copy)
b. A copy of your ID and direct deposit info on hand (you need the direct deposit info to set up your unemployment insurance payments).
c. Correct mailing info- The Department of Labor loves to mail things so make sure and provide a current address.
4) You will receive a determination via mail- they may also call you for supporting information.
I will be honest- there are major delays with the unemployment services due to COVID-19.
You can also call for questions on the status of your claim. Here is the number for the Atlanta office.
Atlanta, GA Department of Labor
